Disco de Whitney Houston: “Whitney”

Whitney's sophomore effort, simply entitled "Whitney", was an album fill with truly great music. Whitney had the voice and some great material (thanks to her mentor Clive Davis) to put together a truly classic album.

The sound of the album is more of a sythesized-pop/R&B feel (remember, this WAS the 80s), with the signature Whitney Houston ballads. The album features productions and writing from Narada Michael Walden (who produced most of the album - and frequently produced for many, many artists throughout the 80s and early 90s), Jellybean, Billy Steinberg/Tom Kelly, and Michael Masser, among others.

Most notable hits are "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "So Emotional" (my personal favorite), "Love Will Save The Day", "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," and "Didn't We Almost Have It All." Another notable song is "I Know Him So Well" which features Whitney's mother Cissy Houston.

Overall, if you are a fan of the great pop sounds of the 80s, or just addicted to Whitney's amazing voice, this is for you!

This is when Whitney was on top. She was pretty unstoppable then; her music was beautiful and her personal life was a bit more normal. I do not think there is a bad song on here. My all time favourite Whitney song is here - Didn't We Almost Have It All. It's such an amazing and powerful song - it truly brings out the best in her vocals. The other great songs are So Emotional, You're Still My Man and Where Do Broken Hearts Go?.

For her sake, I really wish she could get back to this level of standard again. She is so talented and it's such a shame that things aren't as good as they could be for her. If she could sing and have music like this again and be back on top of her game, she'd give Mariah more of a run for their money.

The song order on Whitney Houston's partly self-titled CD ("Whitney", not to be confused with her full-name debut: "Whitney Houston") begins with a fast-slow pattern, then remains slow for the last four ballads. For the most part, I like her fast songs best (like "Love Will Save the Day"--an optimistic tune--and "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and "So Emotional"--both catchy, upbeat tracks). The slower songs are a bit too romantic and cheesy for me, but fans of Whitney Houston will probably like this CD, cheese and all. Whether she's belting out a fast one or easing down to a ballad, Whitney is without a doubt one of the best female singers in pop/r&b music, particularly during the 80s and 90s, as this CD proves.

How dare Lloyd Bradley diss Whitney's singing talent and hits! Evidently, boyfriend has no soul, and is a lousy critic to boot! Dear Mr. Bradley, for your information: "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" were mega-hits and both went to #1 thank you very much.

This is the Whtiney that I fell in love with. Carefree, beautiful, happy and very talented!! "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" has gotta be the song of the eighties. Are you old enough to remember when this song was on the radio every hour and every day? "So Emotional" is a close second favorite track of mine. But everything on this CD is so perfect. I hope Whitney can regain some of this success in the future.
