The family connection obviously hasn't hurt her, but where her debut was a tepid, run-of-the-mill urban-contemporary offering, Solange's follow-up is a creative spray of day-glo color, proving that this artist has a confident, unique identity all her own.
<p>Steeped in vintage R&B samples and a freewheeling aesthetic that borrows from jazz, blues, hip-hop, and electronica, SOL-ANGEL grooves, surprises, and seduces. Whether she's channeling Marvin Gaye ("Ode to Marvin") or the stripped-down Motown vibe of lead single "I Decided," or dabbling in hip-hop or electro, the disc is fun back to front. Help from the Neptunes, Cee-Lo, Mark Ronson, Q-Tip, Lil Wayne, and Bilal makes the package glitter, but it's Solange's quirkiness and exuberance that makes this one of the better R&B albums of 2008.

i love, love, LOVE this album! so fresh, so refreshing, so new, so everything i'm feeling about music. i've been waiting for solange to drop her album ever since i first heard "i decided". and her album did not disappoint. her vibe is so old school and funky fresh, i love it. it's such a different change of pace from everything else. this is one of those cds that you grab from your shelf when you need a little bit of cheering up, feel like dancing like no one's watching, or need some cleaning-up-the-house jammin' music, i swear.
i've been on a femme fatale hype for a while now - i got estelle, algebra, a.keys, mary, keyshia, aaliyah, chrisette ON LOCK on all my stereos - and i'm so glad to add solange to the mix. my favorites are "i decided", "6 o'clock blues", "ode to marvin", "cosmic journey", "dancing in the dark"...ahhh, i might as well say everything 'cause i love it all. haha. it's definitely worth it.
by the way, i love amazon to death, but i got this at target for $6.98. NO LIE. so if you're not sure if you want it, you might as well buy it and give it a shot. first off, i guarantee you'll love it. and if you don't, well, at least it only cost you seven bucks and some change. =)
EDIT: ohhhh, my bad! it's $6.99 on amazon also! sweeeeeet. don't sleep on solange, folks! cop this asap.

- Loving this direction!
Wow! It must be hard to have for Solange to live in her sister's shadow, but this album will or at least SHOULD help her get out of it and garner a big following of her own.
i only first heard about this when i heard the remix of "I Decided" at a club a month ago or so. I loved it and when i realized it was Solange i couldn't wait to see what the album would be like. I mean I was never a fan of hers but this really surprised me.
i love the throwback 60's soul sound she pulls off here. Both versions of "I Decided" are amazing, as well as Sandcastle Disco, Would've Been the One (I LOVE THIS TRACK!), 6 O'clock blues. These are the more "immediate" songs that you love right away. As for some of the other downtempo tracks, the production values and style are all there, so they may grow on me.
overall this was a total surprise for me and i'm really glad about it. Solange could have done a "typical" R&B record - you know the kind that get lost in the shuffle all the time - but instead she took a great new (retro) direction in the way of Amy Winehouse and Duffy, but with a twist.
It's a shame to see all the haters talking about this and comparing her to Beyonce. Who wants to be compared to their older siblings? Imagine having to follow behind Beyonce all the time? I'm just happy to see Solange establishing her own style completely disctinctive from her sister.

- Holy S**t !!!
This album is an instant classic. It felt like I was listening to my old records or something. This woman just captured the sound of Motown, Stax, and Atlantic of the 60's and 70's, put them all in a bag, shook them up, added some hip hop, and created a masterpiece. Personally, from a creative view, this album has destroyed anything big sister has put her voice to. (Big sis is still a better singer though) I never have written a review for something, but this album is so damn good I had to let the world know. I expect her to win many awards for this album, and this is coming from somebody who barely listens to R&B. - An unexpected EXPRESSIVE album!!!
I've never really paid attention to Solange until I saw her Sandcastle video on 106 and Park. I found myself grooving to it and I even got my husband's attention and he loved the song and video too. When I found out she had a new album coming out I was anxious to get it because I loved her voice on Sandcastle.
When I slid Solange's cd into my player in my car I fell in love with the first song then the second song and the third and the fourth...I was like this girl had a NICE CD! Her voice is so refreshing!!

This is really good, and unlike anything else out there. Little Sis is her own woman! I was sooooo pleasantly surprised to find out last Sunday that this album was coming out in two days, and I have not been able to get "Sandcastle Disco" out of my head since then. I don't understand the negative reviews at all. |
