Sam Sparro's eponymous debut album is a good but inconsistent listen. It surprised me, therefore, just how well done this single for "21st Century Life" was. Included here are two mixes of "21st Century Life," a radio edit and a club mix. The radio edit is just a shortened version of the album track. The club mix is a decent extended dance track - it does not amaze, but it fits well in a party playlist or what have you. Also included here is a live version of "Black and Gold" from Radio 1 Live Lounge, which is an interesting, less electronic take on the song that allows one to realize Sparro is a capable vocalist. The two highlights here, however, are the remaining tracks: the original composition "No End in Sight" and a Radio 1 Live Lounge remake of "American Boy," originally performed by Estelle featuring Kanye West. "No End in Sight" would not have been out of place on Sparro's album and, in my opinion, it outshines many of the tracks which made the cut. "American Boy" is a melodic, fun take on the big 2008 hit, with Sparro's own rap included.
Sparro's sophomore release will give us further insight into just how much he has to offer us as an artist. In the meantime, this single from his first effort is a highly enjoyable effort that would be at home in the collections of fans of modern dance/electronic music.
