The Flaming Lips Walk (Really Fast) Onto BroadwayA few weeks ago we broke the news that Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne has been collaborating with Tony-Award winning director/producer Des McAnuff to turn the band’s 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots into a Broadway musical. Now there are reports that the project has an official and unlikely scribe: “West Wing” and “Studio 60″ creator Aaron Sorkin. (Apparently McAnuff, who will be overseeing the show, recommended Sorkin for the job after directing the TV

Single Minded: Death Cab Cover the Cure, Gaslight Anthem Rule “Letterman”Photo: Winter/WireImage Death Cab for Cutie, “Love Song” [Cure Cover] One sad face deserves another: Ben Gibbard provides further proof that everyone who grew up in the suburbs owned a copy of Disintegration. If only he and Death Cab could swoop in and save Robert Smith from himself. The Gaslight Anthem, “The ‘59 Sound” [Live on Letterman] We’ve had this longstanding rule that no live band sounds good on TV. And then we saw NJ’s Gaslight Anthem on Letterman and concluded that either a) our rule was wrong, b) they are, in fact, the band of our generation, or c) some combination thereof. Absolutely breathtaking. The Police, “Roxanne” [Discotech Remix] Heart-stopping and electrifying, Discotech paint the Police bright pink and take them for a night on the town. Charlie Ash, “I Wanna Sex You Up” [Color Me Badd Cover] The critical reappraisal of Color Me Badd begins right here, with this aggro cover of their most grammatically improbable hit. Various Artists, “The Covers Mixtape” [Covers] Fourteen artists tackling 14 songs that aren’t their own, all of them handling their source material with class and panache. Start with Steve Earle’s rollicking punk/country cover of “Breed” and work outwards from there.

Radiohead Lead Featured Artists Coalition, Seek Greater RightsPhoto: Getty Radiohead, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and Iron Maiden are among the initial artists to sign up for and usher in the launch of the new Featured Artists Coalition. As the music industry continues to shift into the digital age, the Coalition seeks to protect the artist’s rights over their own music. “We want all artists to have more control of their music and a much fairer share of the profits it generates in the digital age,” a statement on the FAC’s website reads. “We speak with one voice to help artists strike a new bargain with record companies, digital distributors and others, and are campaigning for specific changes.” The FAC has also penned a six-step manifesto for “fair play,” including increased compensation for commercial use of their music and changes to copyright law. Other members of the Coalition include Kate Nash, Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry, Gang of Four, Billy Bragg and the Verve. Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Getty Metallica capped off Death Magnetic week with a spot on our front cover and a siege to the top of the charts. We talked to Lars about Napster, James about opening for the Rolling Stones, witnessed the band’s tiny BBC show, went behind-the-scenes on the cover shoot and engaged the argument over whether the Guitar Hero version of the album sounded better than the CD. We put Wish You Were Here on repeat to bid goodbye to Pink Floyd keyboardist Rick Wright, who passed away after a brief battle with cancer. We also paid tribute to Motown producer Norman Whitfield and Infinite Jest genius and one-time Rolling Stone writer David Foster Wallace. We called in a few favors in order to catch concerts like Sigur Ros in New York, David Byrne rummaging the Byrne/Eno catalog and Patti Smith at Fashion Week. Plus, Paul McCartney talked about his upcoming first-ever concert in Israel. We caught up with the three members of the Ben Folds Five to talk about their reunion, then watched the trio perform The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Academy Is… Hit the Studio for “Santi” Follow-Up LP “I would compare it to starting over,” the Academy Is… singer William Beckett says of working on the band’s third full-length album. “The way we felt on [2005’s debut] Almost Here.” Beckett, along with drummer Andy Mrotek, bassist Adam Siska and guitarists Mike Carden and Michael Guy Chislett entered a New York recording studio this week to begin production on the follow-up to last year’s Santi. Armed with an estimated 20 tracks in “final form,” the Chicago band will now determine what Siska calls “the best of” for the album’s tracklisting. While Almost Here leaned towards a poppier rock sound, Santi incorporated heavier guitars and a grittier edge thanks to the contributions of producer Butch Walker (Pink, Avril Lavigne). For their still-untitled next LP the Academy has paired with S*A*M and Dave, a.k.a. Sam Hollander and Dave Katz, who have worked with labelmates Gym Class Heroes on “Cupid’s Chokehold” and Cobra Starship on “Snakes on a Plane” along with American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis. While the band is hesitant to assign a sound to the record, which is due at the end of the summer, Beckett maintains, “What we do is write songs, and we’re going to stick to it.”

Christina Aguilera Collapses, Nine Inch Nails Hit Paperwork Snafu, Pearl Jam Announce Live DVD Christina Aguilera canceled two concert dates after collapsing backstage from a “flu.” Backstage whispers say Aguilera has been “letting out her costumes” to accommodate her ever-growing stomach, fueling those pregnancy rumors. Nine Inch Nails’ planned tour of Russia has been called off due to an error filling out visas, thus forcing Russians to get their murderous, satanic lyrics elsewhere. Peter Hook is threatening to sue the rest of New Order if they go all Roger Waters vs. Pink Floyd on him. Creation Records founder Alan McGee has lashed out at former label cash cow My Bloody Valentine, calling the band “bloody nonsense … my way of seeing how far I can push hype.” Pearl Jam are adding to their plentiful library of live performances by releasing Immagine Nel Telaio, a concert DVD from their 2006 Italian tour, on September 25th.
