If I could write a poem or lyric half as good as the lyrics in this song, I'd be happy.
People hearing this song on the radio may roll their eyes, having the knee jerk (emphasis on the jerk) reaction of, "Oh great, another cliche-ridden song. Like we needed another "We Are The World" or "The Greatest Love Of All" anthem."
But this song is smarter than most people expect. And it takes a leap of faith to fully enjoy it.
I had a girl friend in high school who loved Prince, and I didn't really "get" Prince at all until several years into college. "And if the elevator tries to break you down, go crazy." I did not understand that sentiment until I got older.
Natasha Bedingfield touches on the same vein in "Unwritten" when she sings, "I break tradition. Sometimes my tries are outside the lines. We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way."
I chose the title of this review from the "Unwritten" lyrics. I sometimes think of the many artistic statements that have enlightened and supported me from movies, songs, TV, books, teachers, and friends. And I think: What if Prince hadn't written "Purple Rain?" What if The Beatles, Sting, The Eagles, Spielberg, Thornton Wilder, The Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, George Lucas, Jane Austen, Willa Cather, Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey . . . on and on, what if they had chosen early in their lives to NOT be so expressive? What if we had missed hearing their unique words and ideas?
Natasha is encouraging everyone to write their own, unique life story and to be expressive. And if you are like me and you don't think you independently create many good ideas on your own, then I encourage you to try to channel the spirit and ideas of the good people you have known. Share their ideas with others. Let's go crazy - punch a higher floor.
"Today is where your book begins. The rest is still unwritten."
I have said many good things about Natasha Bedingfield and she continues to astound me with her amazing tallent. She is such an astounding lyricist and she writes lyrics that are nothing short of brilliant and her vocals are great. She is also a gorgeous woman. I loved these words and single and thought that this would be not as good but I was fooled. This song is just as good as these words and single and she shows that she is not a one trick pony but an artist that is here to stay. She has amazing tallent and great future ahead of her.
