Disco de La Oreja de Van Gogh: “Guapa”
Descripción (en inglés) :
Recording information: 2006. <p>GUAPA is the fifth album from rock en Espanol outfit La Oreja de Van Gogh. Like the group's previous albums, GUAPA features breezy melodies, catchy pop hooks, and a mixture of pop, rock, and touches of electronica that owes much less to Latin roots music than it does to Europop. The sweet, lilting voice of lead singer Amaia Montero is still the group's most distinguishing feature, but the group's songcraft has been refined and strengthened, making GUAPA one of the band's most consistent and successful releases.

- First Class Journey into LOVG's World

One of the features that attracted me first to the music of LOVG was the deep lyrics coupled with unexpected, yet catchy melodies and rhythms. This album is not the exception and it will not disappoint you. From the inspiring ballad "Apareces Tu" to the grown-up, alternative sounding "Vuelve", the CD covers all the bases. As always, after listening to their album you feel like you've just returned from a first class journey into the mind of LOVG and Amaia's most sacred thoughts and feelings. Each song is well composed, and it's very evident that the band has taken its time to progress each composition from infancy to an euphony full of melodic and detailed arrangements. The lyrics are in perfect harmony with the music and the sequence of each song engulfs all your senses as exemplified in "Dulce Locura". Amaia Montero as always, is passionate in her interpretations.

Bottom line, the album is as good as they get. And if you're a LOVG fan, you're shamefully realizing that each project from them is slowly spoiling you with great artistry.

Buy it! I strongly recommend it.

- Amaia keeps enchanting the world with 'GUAPA'

Although not the same caliber as their previous release, La Oreja de Van Gogh will certainly not disappoint as they continue their worldwide success with their fourth release "Guapa". Amaia's passionate 'entrega' or surrender to her skill is evident. This album contains many clever, eclectic new tunes that are sure to win the hearts of the Latin and Spanish-speaking world. La Oreja continues to experiment with lyrics and genres that bring a new set of catchy tunes that climax into joyful melodies and that are bound to hit the charts. To top that, they package their CD with a bonus DVD of how their artistic genius comes about, the making of this album

At first I was a bit apprehensive with the album thinking that maybe they should have let their innovative music season a bit more, but then it is evident that their ingenious and light spirited compositions are too contagious to let them season any more. If I would ask anything from La Oreja, is for them to implement more bass to their songs.

My favorites are in this order:

1)Apareces Tu - A beautiful romantic rock ballad that begins with an asian sounding intro and with exciting transitions.

2)Mi vida sin ti - a romantic ballad with 'bolero' style dramatic lyrics which progresses, develops and chameleons into an exciting disco/pop extravaganza.

3)Muñeca de trapo - this commercial hit has already peaked to the top 20 in the Latin charts, melodic and fun

4)Perdida - this song slowly progresses into a vibrant orchestration that climaxes at the last part of the song to the words 'sin ti, no sé vivir'

5)Dulce Locura - beautiful piano intro and a catchy chorus

6)Cuantos cuentos cuento - is an interesting 'ranchera' style song in the spirit of regional Mexican classics. I could picture a Rocia Durcal singing this one.

- Guapa is beautiful

I think this album is fantastic. From the first sweet melody of Noche, until the very last note of the Cuando Cuentos Cuento (the hidden track), it's great. The silly little songs like V.O.S., the thought provoking songs like Vuelve, and the sweet songs like Apareces tu, are all there, and so is the LODVG signature sound. It didn't grab me as easily as "Lo que te conte mientras...", but after a few listens has easily become one of my favorite albums.

- Guapa es la mejor!!!!!

Me encantan todos los discos de la Oreja de Van Gogh, pero es probable que Guapa sea la mejor de todos. Dulce Locura es la cancion mas bonita. Compralo!!!!

- A good album that could have been great

First, know that all songs on this album are very good or excellent! And if you haven't heard LODVG before, you will be ecstatic if you love great, happy pop full of melodies and sweetness.

If "Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida" (LQTCMTHLD) had not existed, this album would sound fresh to me, and perhaps almost as good. But there was the predecessor. Fortunately for those of us, who like me, adored "Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida", and very unfortunately for those who did not, because they will probably not enjoy this album either. The melodies, production, and arrangements are too similar to LQTCMTHLD.

Take "Diez Centimetros de Ti". A great song, but it sounds like a mixture of three songs from LQTCMTHLD: "20 de Enero", "Un Mundo Mejor", and "Deseos de Cosas Imposibles".

Take "Irreversible". It sounds, in many ways, like a copy of "Rosas". The melodies again are too similar. Even the way the chorus voices are used is similar to "Rosas".

The similarity in melodies from not only "Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida", but also from prior LODVG albums, has prevented me from enjoying this album for a long time. When I first heard it, I thought........WOW it is going to probably be as good as "Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida", but the magic lasted just a few days, and the songs started to sound old pretty soon.

With the LODVG's talent, I feel like they could have written a bit more sophisticated material this time. Yes, it's as fun as ever, but how long can you chew a piece of bubble gum?

Lyrically I have to say that all the songs are great.

THERE ARE TWO IMPECCABLE TRACKS that stand out and managed to come out original, both lyrically and melodically:

"Escapar" and "Mu'eca de Trapo"

Both songs' melodies are above average and incredibly intense, exciting, and beautifully original.
