Hype Monitor: Fever Ray, New Villager and Ghost HunterEvery week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet to find the ones you need to hear now. The Band: Fever Ray The Buzz: Solo outing of Karin Andersson of Swedish electro-Gothers the Knife. Sounds kind of like the Knife. Listen If: Grey is your favorite color, or grim is your favorite mood. Key Track: “If I Had a Heart,” a bleak, pulsing funeral march where Andersson’s wisp-of-smoke voice curls around fat blue bands of synth. The Band: New Villager The Buzz: Bi-coastal duo bang out brawny indie pop. Listen If: You wish Animal Collective’s fangs were a bit sharper. Key Track: “Rich Doors,” a thumping combo of mantra-like vocals, tribal percussion and cascading keyboards — it’s “Life in a Northern Town” writ very, very small. The Band: Ghost Hunter The Buzz: It’s all eerie: weird wind chimes, whistling keyboards and thudding percussion combine to create the sound of the woods at night. Listen If: You’re looking for a good accompaniment for your next bout of hypnosis. Key Track: “Through the Haze of the Green Glasses,” which is nothing but weird soprano synthesizers and off-kilter percussion — like a Kate Bush song without Kate Bush.

Single Minded: Lil Wayne, Kings of Leon Cover, Kanye West’s Return to Rap and MorePhoto: Wargo/Wireimage The Bird & the Bee, “Don’t Stop the Music” [Rihanna Cover] This week’s quick-win chill generator: The Bird & The Bee re-imagine Rihanna’s nightclub hookup as some kind of eerie blue-light ’70s movie rendezvous, as scored by Kate Bush. Hooking up has never sounded so perilous. Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain, Busta Rhymes & Lil Wayne, “Blame It” [Remix] What’s going to be just as fascinating as Lil Wayne’s ascent is watching him run out of clever sentence constructions and beginning his steady, inevitable decline. His verse on this remix is the first step in that direction. Kanye West vs. Luniz, “I Got 5 On It” [DJ Fabian Heartless Short Edit] Kanye gets mixed-up with mid-’90s rap also-rans Luiz, for a track that should satisfy anyone aggravated that 808s didn’t have enough rapping. Andrew WK, “Bohemian” [Yumi Katsuragi Cover] It doesn’t matter that you won’t know the J-pop source material (we didn’t); this gonzo fist-pumping number will fit your next Atari party just fine. Hayley Davis, “Sex on Fire” [Kings of Leon Cover] It’s official: no matter the context, these lyrics will always sound ridiculous.

Breaking: Ida MariaWho: Ida Maria, a 24-year-old Norwegian punky pop hellion whose debut album Fortress ‘Round My Heart, stocked with caffeinated rock songs about drinking and one-night stands, is finally coming to America after garnering rave reviews throughout Europe. Sounds Like: Performing tight garage-pop tunes at a breakneck speed, Ida Maria sounds like a cross between Nico and the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. Her Fortress already spawned five singles in Europe, including the bubblegum blitzkrieg of “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” and the boozy start-stop of “Oh My God.” Vital Stats: • Ida (pronounced eee-da) Maria, who grew up in the way-northern burg of Nesna, Norway (population: 1,800), has found her success a bit dizzying. “It’s all been a blur,” Maria tells Rolling Stone. “It was like taking out a really fast car.” Even though she moved back to her hometown, Maria, who has a U.S. tour and album release on the horizon, isn’t retreating from the spotlight. “I feel like my job is more important than ever,” she says, “But I’m not trying to figure out the world. I’ll leave that to Bob Dylan.” • Growing up in Nesna was a sheltered experience that didn’t allow her much exposure to outside music. “You have to go by car over a mountain to find a record store,” Maria says, “and there you might find some local country bands. It’s just really hard to find music up there.” Luckily, Maria took a job baby-sitting for the town doctor who happened to have a 3,000-plus record collection, introducing her to the likes of Dylan and Kate Bush. • At her recent show at New York’s Mercury Lounge, Maria berated the crowd for being too quiet — and then emptied a bottle of water over her head. Offstage, though, she’s more like a polite exchange student than her crazed onstage alter ego. “When you work in a bar, watching people drink all night, all you want to do is have a beer,” Maria sheepishly explains. Hear It Now: Fortress Round My Heart finally hits American record stores in April.

Single Minded: Erykah Badu, Goldfrapp, Dolly Parton and More Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. Erykah Badu, “Honey” [Video] In this video for the first single from Badu’s astonishing new album, she recreates a series of classic album covers. Surprisingly, the Dwarves’ Blood, Guts & Pussy is not among them. Goldfrapp, “Clowns” [MySpace] Goldfrapp takes a momentary break from trying to be indie’s answer to Madonna and attempts instead to be indie’s answer to Kate Bush. Surprise, surprise: this suits her much, much better. Janet Jackson, “Feedback” [Video] Ms. Jackson’s best single in years sounds like an Atari going haywire. Twenty-five years from now, this track will be remixed by T-Pain’s son, and will be available as a telepathic download for a nickel. Dolly Parton, “Better Get to Livin’ “ [Video] Well, hey, let’s keep the video theme afloat: this one’s got Amy Sedaris as a carnival barker and Ms. Parton dishing advice. Twenty-five years from now, this track will be remixed by T-Pain’s son and will come free with the purchase of a Taco Bell Quintuple Gordita Club Maxi-Melt. Beach House, “You Came to Me” [Video] The best video of the lot, Baltimore duo does quasi-Goth inside a church. Twenty-five years from now, T-Pain will still have no idea who Beach House are. Mercury Prize Nominees: Rock Daily’s Fave NewcomersEarlier today, nominees were announced for the U.K.’s Mercury prize, which is sort of like the Grammy for Album of the Year, only with better artists and no de facto requirement that you’ve moved a million units. You already know the frontrunners, including Amy Winehouse, Dizzee Rascal and Arctic Monkeys, who won the Mercury last year. But there are some fairly obscure names on the list — like Breaking Artist Bat for Lashes. So here’s a primer for the non-Anglophiles out there: Rock Daily’s favourite Mercury newcomers. Maps Who: James Chapman, a one-man-band from Northampton, England. Sounds Like: Maps’ debut, We Can Create, is full of lush, atmospheric pop that recalls My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless — only warmer and less noisy. Fun Fact: Chapman recorded the album in his bedroom, mostly on a sixteen-track recorder. Jamie T Who: Twenty-two-year-old London singer-songwriter Jamie Treays. Sounds Like: Treays’ debut, Panic Prevention, is long on tuneful, sharp-witted character sketches and charming, ramshackle tunes built on keyboards and samplers. The album has been compared to both the Streets and Badly Drawn Boy. Fun Fact: Treays has self-released a series of mixtapes called Panic Prevention Disco, which have included songs by Primal Scream, Kate Bush and Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The View Who: Scottish quartet whose debut, Hats Off to the Buskers, debuted at number one on the English pop charts early this year. Sounds Like: Bright, spiky Britpop with action-packed grooves and sweet melodies — like a more cuddly version of the Artcic Monkeys. Fun Fact: The View got initial exposure opening for Babyshambles this year after Pete Doherty saw them busking outside one of his gigs in Scotland. New Young Pony Club Who: London quintet who debuted this year with Fantastic Playroom. Sounds Like: Popwise, danceable electro-rock — something like LCD Soundsystem, or what Brit kids call “New Rave.” Fun Fact: NYPC were introduced t

Greeting the SeasonPhoto: Bobby Bank/WireImage As a judge allowed the Grinch into his theater, it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the city last week. The season’s first powder dusted treetops, and Super Cute Hello Kitty and Jeff Koons bunny balloons paraded down Broadway. Barack Obama sledded ahead of Hillary Clinton in the latest Iowa poll, while Clinton settled for the Democratic equivalent of coal in her stocking—a pat on the head from President Bush, who called her a “formidable” candidate. Governor Spitzer, whose approval ratings are hovering near those of Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, had a Scrooge-like epiphany and declared that subway fares should stay at $2; meanwhile, the Feds coughed up another $1.3 billion for the Second Avenue subway. The Trust for Public Land bought an undeveloped seven-acre East River island to preserve it for commuting birds. The gift shop at Saint Patrick’s agreed to investigate whether its crucifixes were made by Chinese sweatshop laborers paid 26 cents an hour. A beleaguered Wall Street rallied behind record pay, while the luckiest bankers of them all, at Goldman Sachs, decided to give something back by starting a billion-dollar philanthropy fund. New crime stats indicated muggings are making a strong comeback in Central Park, Charmin's public potties received their ceremonial first flush from Molly Shannon. Robert De Niro accused Salander-O’Reilly Galleries of heartlessly stealing a dozen of his dad’s paintings. Mary-Kate Olsen went to the emergency room with a bum kidney. A-Rod bagged another MVP trophy, while the state-income-tax authority went gunning for Florida resident Derek Jeter. The Department of Buildings revealed that 40 percent of construction-site accidents are owed to projectiles plummeting to the ground below. And the landmarks commission decreed that the Guggenheim Museum must keep its seasonally appropriate off-white instead of reverting to the more yellow hue Frank Lloyd Wright
