When I saw the title, I expected a cheesy, sugary pop number, but never fear, it's more dance then pop. Dannii is THE Minogue when it comes to successfully marrying strong dance beats with different lyric genres.
04 Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling (Jewels & Stone Radio Edit) - UNRELEASED
A new version of a NEON NIGHTS single, complete with added vocals. Possibly the best mix of this I've heard.
05 Going Going Gone - UNRELEASED
Again, quite `dark'. The lyrics are simple, so the song's very catchy.
06 Everything I Wanted (Metro 7-Inch) - PROMO ONLY
Like DWLTF, this is the best mix of D's GIRL single I've heard, quite surprising, since the mix isn't wildly different. The album version just lacks the `something' this mix has.
07 Undeniable - UNRELEASED
Dannii rarely (sadly) releases slow, more ballad type songs. So grasp a copy of this album & enjoy. Hints of R&B thrown in.
08 No Romeo - UNRELEASED
Dance/R&B. Early Janet Jackson in style. A stand out track. Shame this didn't make it to a studio album.
09 Hide And Seek (Original Thriller Jill Version) - UNRELEASED
A different mix of this track was a b-side on I BEGIN TO WONDER. I prefer this dancier mix. Dannii's vocals are much clearer here.
10 Hurt In Love - UNRELEASED
Another standout track. I just love the song's intro - it hooks you straight in. The music speeds up, slows down, and then picks up the pace again. I love it when Dannii tries something different.
11 Who Do You Love Now? (Riva's Bora Bora Edit) - RELEASED ON MC ONLY
Another favourite single mix of Dannii's, released on CD for the first time.
12 Put The Needle On It (Cicada Vocal Edit)
The extremely popular Cicada mix was included on the single release, but was so good it's been included here.
13 Come And Get It (Alternative Radio Cut) - UNRELEASED
A remix of this track is hidden at the end of the NEON NIGHTS album.
Co-wrote, mixed & produced by JCA (Behind the mega hit I BEGIN TO WONDER), this screamed single & indeed was going to be released in Germany.
14 Begin To Spin Me Round (Radio Edit)
There's no need to say anything about this mash up with Dead Or Alive's classic dance track.
15 Love Me Like This - UNRELEASED
Dance/R&B/pop. Again Dannii experiments with combining different genres. Again it works beautifully.
16 Bad Weather - UNRELEASED
Lighter pop/R&B track. Again, the words hook you in & become lodged in your brain.
17 Invitation - UNRELEASED
My personal favourite. Slower then the rest of the album (except Undeniable) & a stronger marriage of light pop & R&B. Dannii is asking an old love to come back to her. Love the strings in the intro.
18 It Won't Work Out (Ross Callum Single Mix) - UNRELEASED
OMG!! This mix is simply stunning; Dannii recorded the vocals for a possible single release. The single didn't happen, which is a shame. D's vocals are amazing.
(Correct tracklist. Four songs have been removed from this release as they weren't mastered in time. The album producers & Warner didn't want to delay the release, leaving fans hanging. The track 'Undeniable' has been added to make up for this)
If you're new to Dannii's music this is a good place to start, you'll still recognize six of the single names to help familiarize you to Danni's dance/pop hybrid. And if you've got Dannii's GIRL, NEON NIGHTS or HITS & BEYOND, there's no need to fret. The mixes of the singles here haven't appeared on any of Dannii's previous albums!
If you're familiar with the fabulous NEON NIGHTS album you'll also recognize 3 of the other tracks; `Hide And Seek', `Come And Get It' and `It Won't Work Out'. Again, the mixes of these tracks have never been released before.
Then to really excite us, there's an unbelievable 9 unheard new' tracks!!! The vast majority of these tracks were recorded around the `Neon Nights' era, and for an unfinished London Records album. The unreleased tracks sound like early Janet Jackson - pop & dance combined with urban, R&B undertones.
These tracks are the best of the best, in fact Dannii's GET INTO YOU, GIRL, NEON NIGHTS, CLUB DISCO & UNLEASHED are the only albums I own that I don't skip over any tracks. D's not just a `pop' singer, she experiments with mixing genre styles & is growing as a songwriter too.
UNLEASHED comes with a stunning 24 page booklet, with loads of photos & all of the song lyrics.
This collection should've been released back in 2004 or 2005. We waited way too long for something NEW from Dannii Minogue and we still don't have a followup to 2003's "Neon Nights", What's the problem?.
Instead we got "The Hits and Beyond" in 2006 which served no point at all. Then a year later we got a digital collection only available on iTunes called "Club Disco" with more of the same songs available under a different photo. A year after that we get another collection titled "Unleashed: Hits & Rarities" with stuff that sounds like extra stuff from 2003's release.
"Neon Nites" happened 5 years ago and I'm completely over the possibility or suspense of there being hidden, rare, remixed or "Unleashed" material from the album. The "Unleashed: Hits & Rarities"" song selection seems to be up to par, It just was released a little too late. The decade is almost over and all we keep getting is the same material released over and over again with different collection titles and different artwork.
This release doesn't have the same effect on me as it wouldv'e a few years ago when I was excited and wondering if there were more remixes and b-sides. For those of you wondering, I didn't purchase the album. I borrowed it from another Dannii fan and this review is what i'm coming up with after tuning in to it.
Overall, It's not a bad release. I'm mostly bitter because a followup to "Neon Nights" should've seen the light of day and awkward remixes and dubs is all we keep getting. Dannii Minogue is not getting any younger, get in the studio and do an album and stop playing these games.
