A nice single disc collection of Cher's 1987-1999 output, but with so many hits collections out there for Cher, this one is just not needed. I can't really figure out WHY this was issued, considering that "The Very Best Of Cher" just came out last year with all of these tracks on it. So I guess if all you want are the hits from the start of her "comeback" era, then I guess this is for you. For everyone else, there's no need to rush out and get it.
I am in love with budget compilations...they are genius and worth every penny. And I am madly in love with budget Cher compilations. The more the merrier in my book. "The Best of Cher:The Millennuim Collection Volume 2" is worth every single red cent you pump into it. It's a nice sample of some of Cher's best work...although I would have included tracks not found on her "The Very Best of Cher", but beggars can't be choosers. The packaging is well done, with some great pictures and nice liner notes. With the plethora of budget releases hitting the market these days, blaze a new trail and pick this baby up for your collection. For this price...you can always use more Cher.
This is an excellent compilation of the second phase of Cher's career, and you don't even have to be a gay guy to see/hear it. Overall, Cher's powerful vocals are well displayed and this is an energetic album. There are no lame songs and really just a few songs that are merely O.K. Most songs are definitely good. Here's a rundown:
Believe - fast dance number. Probably got overplayed in its radio heyday though.
All or Nothing - another quick dance tune. Strong chorus line
One by One - very good, kinda techno number. An overlooked gem
Love and Understanding
Save Up All Your Tears - a more serious song about how singer's lover needs to get his act togetehr or the singer will be gone and he'll be left weeping about it by himself
Heart of Stone - slower with a pulsing drum beat
Shoop Shoop Song - remake of "It's in His Kiss" from 60s.
If I Could Turn Back Time - I think this is the tune that launched the Cher comeback in late 80s.
I Found Someone - stirring and determined
Jesse James - also stirring and assertive. The Jesse James reference is a bit confusing, but kinda cool nonetheless
We All Sleep Alone - a good more melancholy and pensive song. It recognizes that loneliness is a fact of life.
I've always loved Cher, with or without Sonny Bono. I always thought her music with Sonny was the best, even if he did discover her. I did get to see her in concert when she had her farewell tour in New Mexico and it was fun. I didn't meet her sadly, but it was fun seeing her live in concert. I still vote for the best music was the Sonny and Cher hits rather than her alone if you ask me but her hits alone were still good.
