Christian rock music's detractors often cite the eternally sunny, feel-good "I'm okay, you're okay" attitude of many CCM albums as a quality antithetical to real rock & roll. While Casting Crowns certainly offer their fair share of optimistic praise, the group also takes a page from the original 1960's San Francisco Jesus Freak movement's aggressively evangelical book. On several songs, lead vocalist/lyricist Mark Hall quite directly points out the disparity between the Bible's teaching and the world's shortcomings, calling out all manners of hypocrisy, materialism, and cowardice, and then demanding an explanation. This unusually forceful message is framed in an appropriately bombastic arena-rock sound that recalls the heyday of bands like Asia and Kansas. In addition, Hall's voice is a powerful tool perfectly suited to throwing around a little fire and brimstone, often sounding like a cross between Nickelback's Chad Kroeger and Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd. A refreshingly unabashed statement of Christian fundamentalism in the literal sense of the term, CASTING CROWNS offers an energetic and tuneful missive. At the risk of getting a "not helpful" rating, I am not going to actually review the entire album, which has been done countless times on the regular album. Suffice to say it's one of the best Christian albums I've ever heard.

What I wanted to say that the DVD on this edition overlaps the Casting Crowns, Live From Atlanta DVD. There is only one new clip on this DVD, which is called "The Casting Crowns Story." It's about five minutes long. It's interesting and it's also why I bought this edition of the album instead of the regular one, even though I already had the live CD. So just FYI, if you already have the live CD and the album...you may not want this. For what it's worth.

This album is a true blessing. Casting Crowns has a knack for writing songs that every Christian can realte to at one time or another. Songs like Who Am I, Here I Go Again, What if His People Pray and so many others are incredible. Production is tight, vocals are good, and lyrically sound. And this package has a DVD which is not as extensive as I would have like to see, but it does give a good background introduction to Casting Crowns. I recommend this CD.

If you are expecting to get a CD with the DVD as a bonus DO NOT BUY THIS!!! The CD side has some type of copy protection that keeps computers, Media Centers, and some newer cd/dvd players from recognizing disk. Forget about fair use or using this on a portable player. I've bought hundreds of CDs and this is the only one I can't play. I'd give this a zero star or lower if Amazon allowed it.
