Party Roundup: It Was No 'VF' Extravaganza, But Elton John Knows How To Throw A Party [Oscars]

Even though Hollywood's A-List was deprived of a chance to eat and drink on Vanity Fair's dime last night, two fiestas proved that celebrities will not let a little thing like tradition get in the way of a night of free booze and swag. Elton John's Annual AIDS Foundation Oscar Party usually has a strong turnout of power players, but the star wattage at the 16th incarnation of the bash last night was a few standard deviations past the norm, thanks mainly to the absence of Graydon Carter's soiree. Highlights included Tilda Swinton kissing her Oscar in some sort of Buddhist mating ritual, as well as the public debut of Hollywood's newest power couple, Sean Penn and Petra Nemcova. Elton John 16th Annual AIDS Foundation Oscar Party: Elton John coddled Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard, while model Petra Nemcova and Sean Penn canoodled all night as the newest couple in Hollywood making their big debut on Oscar night. Harrison Ford (victim of perhaps Jon Stewart's worst joke of the evening) arrived with the (finally) well-dressed Calista Flockhart; Courtney Love managed to clean up her act; Seal turned the cameras on the cameramen. Kate Beckinsale proved having kids does not a schlumpy mom make; Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres continued their Lesbians Are Cool, Just Deal With It Tour; Jeremy Piven took a break from his yoga pursuits to swing by The Rocket Man's shindig. Clive Davis's Pre-Grammy Party

Clive Davis's annual pre-Grammy party is one of the hottest parties of the year for music, with stars coveting invites almost as much as those giant golden record players. Whitney Houston's appearance was a highlight of the evening, with everyone speculating she would perform something from her upcoming comeback album, although it never happened. She did, however have this amazing mullet-inspired hair that would give Billy Ray a run for his money. It reminds me of a coon-skin cap, only it's her hair and not an animal. Carrie Underwood arrived with Chace Crawford, who were rumored to be together while Chace was busy kissing other ladies. Janet Jackson was there, with her scary abs covered up, thank God. Fashion disasters of the night include Lindsay Lohan's bag/toga ensemble, and surprisingly Rihanna, who wore some sort of long-sleeved Native American-ish frock. The night's performers included Chris Daughtry, who literally said on stage, "I was here last year, and I had to sit in the audience, and it sucks watching everyone else perform." Is that supposed to make him look grateful? Also featured on stage were Leona Lewis, Akon, Wyclef Jean, Andrea Bocelli, Slash, Chad Kroeger, Fantasia, and Josh Groban in the world's most random line-up ever. Janet Jackson was presented with the Vanguard Award at the GLAAD Media Awards at the Kodak Theatre last night in LA. The Vanguard Award honors the celebrity who makes a big effort to combat discrimination against LGBT people. She had a lot of gay backup dancers or something. ABC's Ugly Betty and Brothers & Sisters were honored for their potrayal of gay characters. Matthew Rhys plays the gay lawyer brother on B&S and Ugly Betty is just chock full of queers. It's set at a fashion magazine. Even the telephones are gay on that show. In attendance at the awards were Ellen DeGeneres and her chick Portia De Rossi, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Manuel, Billy Baldwin and Candis Cayne who plays his transgender lover on Dirty Sexy Money, Sally Field, T.R.
