Disco de Anna Nalick: “Wreck of the Day”
Descripción (en inglés) :
Personnel: Anna Nalick (vocals); Christopher Thorn (guitar); Lyle Workman, Stuart Mathis (guitars); Zac Rae (keyboards); Brad Smith (bass guitar); Joey Waronker, Matt Chamberlain (drums).
Recording information: 2004.
A mere 20 years old at the time her major label debut, WRECK OF THE DAY, was recorded, Anna Nalick makes a powerful impression. Demonstrating a grasp of songcraft and stylistic certainty that belies her years, Nalick also shows a reflectiveness and sensitivity in her music uncommon for someone her age (or any age, for that matter).
Taking a cue from singer-songwriters like Tori Amos and Fiona Apple, Nalick creates delicate melodies that are perfectly served by her pure, breathy voice. Nalick is not afraid to dip into rock ("In the Rough") or country ("Wreck of the Day"), but it is on the melancholic piano-based gems (like the album's opener and single "Breathe (2 AM)") that she shines brightest.

- I'll Take Another...

I bought the original wreck of the day about a month after it was released and it is AMAZING. I was so excited for new songs that I bought this album too. Don't get me wrong, the new songs are REALLY good too. I just wish I would have known you can buy them on iTunes.

My advice:

If you do not own the original Wreck of the Day--buy this one instead

If you DO own the original--buy "Wreck 06" "more than melody" "drink me" and "soldier" off of iTunes. (the album artwork is NOT worth your money).

Also...

If you like "Breathe 2am" and are not sure if you should buy an Anna album at all, my advice is DO. Breathe was the only song I had heard from her (and I only heard it once) before i bought the album

- Life, love, and passion.

Anna Nalick's "Wreck of the Day" is a beautiful blend of adult alternative and pop, covering topics such as love, relationships, and life in general. Deep, and well thought out lyrics give a powerful peak into Anna's own life, as well as a pleasant listening experience.

Although the music, lyrics, and vocals are all first-rate, I must say that my favorite part about the entire album is Anna's awesome vocals; deep, yet sweet, innocent and feminine at the same time. She is currently one of only two or three female vocalists I really enjoying listening too.

A lot of her songs are talking about love. Love forgotten, love broken, love wasted, love needed, you name it - it's in there. They seem to show a search for love, which she apparently hasn't found yet (see the song "In the Rough".)

While Breathe is probably the best song on the album from a pop perspective, the other songs are quite fine as well - just hard enough not to be boring, yet soft enough to be relaxing and though provoking

From a family-friendly perspective, the majority of the album should be fine for the entire family. While most younger kids wont be interested in some of the romance and love songs, there is nothing explicit or vulgar about it. Paper Bag, however, does use the D word two or three times, but that's the only cussing on the album.

If you're one who likes to stick to the mainstream pop singers (Britney, Gwen, etc), you probably won't like Anna Nalick, but if you're looking for some uniqueness, Wreck of the Day is the place to find it.

Quite bluntly, Anna has talent, and I look forward to watching it develop over the years to come and her future albums.

- Seriously Addictive

I am so seriously addicted to this CD that I can't fathom how I lived without it for the last seven months since it was released. I bought the CD after seeing Anna open for Rob Thomas in concert and was blown away by her voice and songs live. I didn't know anything about her beforehand. But I had the CD on repeat most of yesterday evening, and it's currently on repeat again right now. The whole CD. Not just a few songs. The entire CD is simply awesome. I've been taking it back and forth from inside, to the car, and back inside. Don't hesitate to buy this CD. You couldn't possibly be disappointed.

- Fresh, lovely and addictive music.

This is one of my favorite cds, in constant play mode in my room. Anna has this strong, clear and sweet but not sugary voice that takes every song and makes it sound like a luscious, liquid jewel river of sound. I adore all the songs on the album but Citadel, Satelite, 2 am and Paper Bag are my top favorites although they all sound so incredible and are simply some good music to listen to that its hard to say the other songs aren't my favorite as well, its just that those are no miss Hits that will make anyone swoon.

Sometimes I forget that this girl Is 5 years younger than me and that its her debut album because she sounds like she was born to sing. Im all ready a fan of hers for as long as she plans on making cd's because I like her style, her songs and she looks like a nice regular person, someone you'd wish success on, not some spoiled pop brat who needs a microphone to distort their voice. Overall this cd is simply chuck full of great songs and everytime I listen to it, I wonder how I ever did withouth pop music this good.

Simply wonderful disc, for any age or musical interest.

- 'Wreck' Channels Lilith Influences; Yields Five Masterpieces

There is a deeper level of despondency lurking beneath the vivacious demeanor Nalick has presented in recent media appearances.

Listen to 'Catalyst', as Nalick confesses "taking these pills to fill up my soul/and drinking them down with cheap alcohol"; or the title track 'Wreck of the Day', where she laments "I'm not falling in love/I'm just falling to pieces".

With the lead single 'Breathe (2am)', she continues her descent - "No one can find the rewind button now/So cradle your head in your hands/And breathe...just breathe".

She seeks escape via fantasy - "This make-believe will get me through another lonely night" in the 8th track, 'In My Head', before finally seeking solace in a distant future: "I can hold you....When I go" she achingly purrs in the lilting 'Forever Love (Digame)'.

For these five outstanding tracks alone, which recall the very best of late-90's pop-folk songwriting, 'Wreck' gets five stars.

Elsewhere, Nalick channels myriad Lilith-esque influences with solid yet mixed results.

There are traces of Jewel ('Satellite'), Andrea Corr ('In the Rough'), Michelle Branch ('Bleed') and most strikingly Fiona Apple ('Citadel', 'Paper Bag', & 'Consider This'). In fact, the closing track 'Consider This' sounds incredibly familiar upon first listen - almost like a theme and variation upon 'Get Gone' from Apple's sophomore album, 'When the Pawn...'

Succinctly rendered, 'Wreck' will stand the test of time, due to the prolific songwriting and heartbreaking performances that are scattered throughout this record.
